Meet your Mother Superior

I first read Dune in the fall of 2023. I had initially bought the book after watching the Denis Villeneuve film in 2021, but it took me about two years to finally sit down and read it. Many people know Dune is not an easy book to read. Frank Herbert does not ease you into the Dune universe, he throws you into it. However, after I made it through the first book, I was hooked. It took me about 2 years to read Dune, and only about 6 months to read the remaining five books in the original series.

My favorite character, and who I drew inspiration from for the name of this blog, is Mother Superior Darwi Odrade. She is the most well-written woman in the Dune universe and someone who is extremely relatable. As a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother, she is expected to put duty above feelings, but it's her embrace of her human side that makes her such an intriguing and nuanced character. She makes her first appearance in Heretics of Dune, the fifth book in the series. If you are just beginning to read Dune, it may take some time until you are finally introduced to her, but it is well worth it!

If you have any questions about Dune or would like to suggest some topics for me to cover, please feel free to reach out to me through the form at the bottom of the Home page.

Dutifully yours,
Mother Superior
